Through the renovation and expansion of the Lavater school complex, the significant historical memories embodied in this Zurich school building have been preserved and revitalized, ensuring their legacy for future generations. The complex was initially constructed between 1896 and 1897, designed by urban architect Gustav Gull in the style of the Swiss National Museum in Zurich, serving as a classic example of the ingenious fusion of historical architecture and modern technology.
In this renovation project, the restoration of historic windows was a key focus. These windows were meticulously repaired by Holzmanufaktur SWISS AG, a specialist in the restoration of historic wooden windows and a partner of Holzmanufaktur Rottweil. Now, these windows are equipped with modern double-glazed panes and feature high-performance Swisspacer Ultimate warm-edge spacers at the glass edges.
During the restoration of the historic sandstone facade, the original windows underwent meticulous repair and were fitted with new double-glazed panes. Additionally, an automated fabric sunshade was installed to provide thermal insulation for the building in summer. This window renovation project stands as a exemplary case that balances energy efficiency with historical preservation requirements.
The original composite windows largely preserved their original design character but underwent technical upgrades. Historically significant interior glass was fully retained, while exterior glass was replaced with modern insulating glass featuring Planiclear and ECLAZ ONE coatings. Due to the stringent installation requirements of this historic building, the entire process demanded complex logistical support, including the use of cranes and specialized transport crates for installing windows in elevated positions.
The insulated glass unit used in this renovation has a thermal transmittance (Ug value) of 1.4 W/m²K, achieving an excellent balance between technical and economic aspects. Combined with the Swisspacer Ultimate spacers at the glass edges, it forms an energy-efficient overall structure.
Dirk Obser, Project Manager at Holzmanufaktur Rottweil, stated: "For projects like the Lavater School, which must meet both cultural heritage preservation requirements and energy efficiency standards, selecting an interval bar with both technical performance and minimalist design is crucial. The Swisspacer Ultimate interval bar impressed us with its outstanding Psi value, matte and understated appearance, and sophisticated technical perforation design. Even as a small component, it embodies the overall design philosophy, successfully combining historical building conservation, sustainability, and daily practicality.".
